Roads for Families

Roads for Families is a planning concept, not a physical place or facility. It focuses on safely and efficiently moving people by supporting a variety of transportation options. The goal is to reduce congestion while benefiting users of all ages and abilities, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and transit riders. Roads for Families contribute to livable communities by creating roadways where everyone feels safe, comfortable, and welcome, regardless of how they travel. A safe transportation environment is essential to strengthening public transit and enhancing overall community well-being.

The BMPO’s Roads for Families Program emphasizes moving people, not just vehicles, and promoting roadway designs that serve all users, not solely cyclists or pedestrians. The program is guided by the Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Roads for Families Advisory Committee (RFAC), which acts as a steering committee and regional sounding board to help identify needs and priorities across Broward County.

As part of the initiative, the BMPO also conducts Walking Audits throughout Broward County to help identify corridors and areas that could benefit from street safety and mobility improvements. These community-focused assessments bring together residents, stakeholders, technical staff, elected officials, and non-traditional transportation partners to observe real-world conditions and discuss opportunities for improvement. Walking Audits are coordinated with local municipalities and often hosted near schools, parks, community centers, and local businesses. Feedback gathered during these audits helps shape project scopes and ensures community needs are reflected in future transportation recommendations.

 Walking Audit Objectives

  • Experience the surrounding area as a pedestrian
  • Evaluate the safety and quality of the pedestrian experience
  • Identify barriers to a walkable/bikeable/transit friendly environment
  • Propose recommendations for improvements

The program also includes funding through Roads for Economic Vitality (REV), a competitive grant program that provides financial support to municipalities for eligible transportation projects.

Overall, the Roads for Families Program focuses on improving roadway infrastructure by addressing gaps in the local and regional transportation network, creating safer and more connected communities for everyone.
