Grants

One of the many ways that The Broward MPO helps bring transportation projects and studies to life by applying for federal, state, and regional grants that fund planning, safety improvements, transit, bicycle and pedestrian projects, technology, infrastructure hardening, and more.

In simple terms, the MPO work with cities, counties, transit agencies, and transportation partners to identify community needs, develop transportation plans, and pursue funding opportunities that can help turn ideas into real projects.

Many transportation grants come from the U.S. Department of Transportation through agencies like the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The MPO may apply directly for certain grants, while other funding opportunities are coordinated through the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Four.

The process typically begins with identifying a transportation need or community priority, such as improving safety, expanding transit, reducing congestion, supporting economic development, or creating better walking and biking connections. The MPO then works with local governments and partners to develop studies, collect data, engage the community, and prepare competitive grant applications.

Strong grant applications often include:

  • Community support and public input
  • Data and technical analysis
  • Safety and mobility benefits
  • Environmental and economic impacts
  • Partnerships between agencies and municipalities
  • Alignment with regional transportation plans

Many federal grants also require projects to be included in the Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) or Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), which are developed by the MPO in coordination with local and state partners.

Transportation grants can support a wide variety of efforts, including:

  • Transportation master plans and corridor studies
  • Transit expansion and mobility hubs
  • Roads for Families improvements
  • Bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure
  • Traffic safety initiatives
  • Freight and goods movement
  • Technology and innovation projects
  • Extreme weather and infrastructure hardening planning

In addition to securing funding, the MPO also helps manage, prioritize, and coordinate transportation investments across the county to ensure projects align with long-term community goals.

Ultimately, grant funding allows the MPO and our partners to move transportation projects from vision to implementation, helping communities create safer, more connected, and more efficient transportation systems for the future.
